Richard Watts

Richard Watts is from the United Kingdom and studied at Bournemouth College of Art and Design and at Exeter College of Art and Design. After completing a B.A. with honors in 1996 in 3-dimensional design, he worked for various companies making furniture and theme park styling. He trained to teach design in 1998 where he was awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Education.   He then taught art and design in the UK before teaching in Kenya and South Africa. He always practices his art in each country and produced large scale metal giraffes to help promote the recycling of plastic bottles.

Richard has been showing his work through a series of craft fairs in the UK. Selling direct to the public. He has been living and working in Beijing for the last 6 years. He says that he draws inspiration from the world around him and especially from his childhood years growing up in rural Dorset. He is currently looking at abstracting ideas from nature, working in oils on a large scale and in an expressionist style and trying to capture the ethereal qualities of late summer.

He spends as much time as possible in the ‘great outdoors’, hiking, trail running and communing with nature. He takes this time to capture images and think about how to portray them on canvas. He says these silent times give the mind time to think and process. Time to live, time to be happy and time to breathe.
